Mini Velo
All the features, finish, and detail in a compact, portable package
Perfect for a zippy commute accross the city, but equally happy to glide across gravel or woodland trails, or even carry your baggage on a longer trip.
Lightning-fast acceleration, instantaneous handling responses, clearance for wider BMX-style tyres (max. 2.2”) so you can throw it around on the rougher terrain, all the practicality of modern groupset and disc brake options, on a bike that you can comfortably fit in your hallway, or even pack down into a suitcase – and, most importantly, it’s so much fun to ride.
The concept of the Mini Velo is not new - the first Moulton, for example, appeared as early as 1962 - and the market for small-wheeled bikes that can be easily packed away and don’t take up mach space is not exactly brimming with options, but there are a few out there. The Mini Velo as a concept has become quite popular in Japan and other East-Asian countries, which makes perfect sense in a high-density metropolis such as Tokyo. The compact size and nimble handling has proved to be a perfect fit, where both living and working space is at a premium, plus the Japanese aesthetic trend of miniaturisation only further boosts the popularity of the Mini Velo over there.
The Sven Cycles Mini Velo feels very much like a regular-sized bike when you’re on the saddle - that is until you accelerate or dive into the corners, when things really begin to get exciting. The geometry will feel quite familiar - It has a fairly standard bottom bracket height, a wheelbase comparable to a normal road bike, and standard stack and reach thanks to the long head tube. So no need for a stupidly long seat post or an unsightly, overly-tall stem. It features the same high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail you would expect from any hand-built Sven Cycles frame, with all the compatibility of modern performance components. With the wheels being 20”, there is a broad range of quality lightweight rims from the rugged world of BMX to choose from, as well plenty of tyres available - from quick, slick, fast-rolling city tyres, to something with a very knobbly tread, and everything in-between.
